Free Traffic Part 5 – Social Bookmarking/Networking

Background

Given that the web is growing at an astounding rate with millions of websites popping up every month, there are plenty of content online for the average person to visit and read. So much so that people get lost in looking for what they want and to decide whether the sources are credible or not.

For a time, search engines for a time has risen to cope with the massive amount of content. With spiders to index information and rank sites that gives the content the reader is looking for, search engines have adequately met user specifications for content search. But as the internet continues to burgeon and hackers getting used to going around search engine algorithms to put their websites high in rank (despite having less credible content), there is a growing need for another solution.

In the recent times, a new development on the internet has taken place to provide that solution: Social Bookmarking.

Social bookmarking allows people to suggest and rate websites according to their content quality and uniqueness. In a way, it goes through a more stringent filtering via human eyes than search engine spiders. If more people rate it as good and reccomends to others, the website gets more visible to others.

There is an increasing trend that people use social bookmarking sites as their homepage or ’search engines’. They search within the social bookmarking sites which include Digg, Delicious and Stumbleupon. In some cases, the results are more pertinent to what they are looking for because like-minded people have already reviewed them.

How can Social Bookmarking can help you drive traffic?

  1. Immediate Exposure
Social bookmarking gives immediate exposure to your website. Because once you submit a bookmark, it appears on top of the list chronologically (and those rated highly will stay high). This allows a spurt in traffic for a while. The key to optimize this effect is to (1) write a good title and (2) insert your bookmark into the correct category.
  2. User reviews
User reviews allows you to improve on your website for more traffic optimisation strategies.
  3. Linkbacks
Like-minded people might find your website interesting and create linkbacks. A community can also be built to foster link recommendations.
  4. Increase PageRank
Social bookmarking sites have good pageranks and linking them to you will also boost yours.
  5. Potentially viral
If your website has something to offer or is a HIT in some viral way, social bookmarks can leverage on that virality by human recommendation and word-of-mouth. Serious.
